Before applying (Time to be ready)-
App timing- well, time for applying is normally mid august and up to mid march. If you start early, you always have advantages like getting lots of chances(vacant position) but even if you are late its ok.(in 3rd year i started after end sem in dec and in 4th year I started in January.) making it as early as possible gives you enough time to apply a lot. Also deadline for most internship program is between nov-feb , so you will not miss any deadline and you will have lots of time for other formalities if you get internship early.
Some important points-
• Whole internship program is based on demand and supply theory. They have demand for skilled worker and you are supply. So if there is a vacancy where you are applying (none other have applied), they will accept your application at all .And if there is no vacancy i.e. no demand, you will never get any response. so its all about your luck that whether you are applying at right place or not.
Hence, demand or vacancy is the only internship Determining Step (IDS) (equivalent to rate determining step in kinetics).so apply more and more as much as you can.
• Applying for internship needs great patience and a painstaking (sometimes frustrating) job. Sometimes even if you have sent 100 mails, you won’t get a single response not even a NO, which might make you sad. But you should avoid this, keep patience and keep mailing without wasting a single day.
whenever you feel frustrated just keep in mind that those 2-2.5 months will be most awesome days of your life till now ,you will visit and explore foreign , add a very important academic project in your resume(which will improve your resume and help you in higher study and job) , enjoy holidays and much more and these all for free, on the expense of others (this is what barney calls legen…. wait for it… dary )
• In foreign internship, GPA doesn’t matter. Of-course if you have good GPA(or you are a DR) it will help you a lot but if your GPA is low you need not to worry a lot(even I know a boy with GPA around 4.9-5.2,who had 2-3 offers ).Again I will say the most important thing is vacancy not GPA. There are few internship programs like Top US university internship, DAAD, French govt. internship, Max-plank society internship etc., who only consider bright students having good GPA and academics.
It is advised to get help from seniors, who have gone for internship. They can help you in many ways-
• whatever, I am writing here, these all information you can get by your seniors from their personal experience.
• You may get sample resume and cover letter and most important some address list.
• They can help you in respond to positive reply and negotiating with professors and much more.
Next step to applying is to write a good resume -
Always Remember-
A good resume should be like a girl’s mini-skirt long enough to cover all valuable information and Short enough to create an interest.
